Learning Skills & Work Habits

The development of strong learning skills and work habits is an important part of a student’s education. These skills help students become successful, independent learners and prepare them for future education, employment, and life beyond school.

Learning skills and work habits are evaluated separately from a student’s achievement of curriculum expectations and are not used to determine a student’s grades. They are reported each term on the provincial report card.

Students are assessed in the following six areas:

  • Responsibility - managing commitments and taking responsibility for learning and behaviour.
  • Organization - creating and following a plan to complete work and achieve goals.
  • Independent Work - completing tasks and managing learning with appropriate support.
  • Collaboration - working effectively and respectfully with others.
  • Initiative - demonstrating curiosity, taking appropriate action, and seeking opportunities to learn.
  • Self-Regulation - setting goals, monitoring progress, and reflecting on learning and behaviour.

Families can support the development of these skills by encouraging students to take increasing responsibility for their learning, organization, and daily routines.
